Contract Works – Why you need it?

When you’re running a contracting business, the focus is rightly on getting the job done – on time and on budget. But what happens if a key project is hit by fire, theft, storm damage or an accident on site halfway through the build?

That’s where Contract Works insurance comes in.

What is Contract Works cover?

Contract Works (sometimes called Contractors’ All Risks) is designed to protect the work in progress on a construction site – from the first day on site right through to completion and handover.

In practical terms, it can cover:

  • Work in progress – the structure you’re building, extending or refurbishing
  • Materials on site – whether fixed or waiting to be installed
  • Materials in transit – between your premises and the site
  • Temporary buildings, cabins and site set-up (where required by the policy)

If something goes wrong – fire, flood, storm, malicious damage, theft or other insured events – Contract Works cover can help pay to re-do the work and replace materials, so you’re not funding that loss out of your own pocket.

Why contractors should consider Contract Works cover

  • Protect your profit on the job
Without the right cover, having to redo work or replace materials can wipe out the margin on a project – or worse.
  • Meet contract / JCT requirements
Many main contractors and contract conditions expect Contract Works cover to be in place. Having it shows you’re professional and compliant.
  • Avoid project delays and disputes
Insurance can help get work back on track more quickly, reducing downtime and the risk of arguments over who is paying.
  • Support your reputation
Being able to put things right swiftly after a loss helps protect your relationship with the client and your reputation in the market.

Optional covers that often sit alongside Contract Works

Depending on your set-up, we can also look at:

  • Hired-in plant – protection for machinery you hire in (often a contractual requirement)
  • Own plant, tools and equipment – cover for your own kit on site and in transit
  • Public & Employers’ Liability – for injury or damage to third parties or employees
